What is the difference between a scholarly database and a website? How do you know if a website is credible?

Evidence-based practice (EBP) research implores one to use credible libraries and databases as opposed to online searches using Google and even Google Scholar. University libraries like the Grand Canyon University’s library services provide advanced search sections that offer student an opportunity to search for certain materials and content using different filters from the vast information by focusing on relevant databases.

The two scholarly databases from the GCU library that will enable me get best research articles in supporting the capstone change proposal are PubMed and PsycINFO. PubMed has millions of published articles relevant to the nursing field. A majority of the articles are research and scholarly. They are funded by the National Institute of Health with the intent of developing study findings to help providers and institutions offer the best care, especially primary care (GCU, n.d).

The PsycINFO allows one to retrieve international literature on a host of issues related to mental health, psychology and overall health promotion interventions by different stakeholders to improve care delivery. The database fosters sharing of peer-reviewed literature and very popular among researcher dealing with mental health programs and healthcare in general. The database also allows one to have access to extensive sources and has easy search features and filtration of information that is relevant to providers. These databases have different types of journal article based on various levels of evidence, from controlled trials to systematic reviews leading to better collaboration.

The use of these two databases is better than using Google Scholar or the general Internet search. Firstly, the databases are easy to navigate and have filters that make it easy for one to access the requisite journal articles fast and easily. For instance, when searching for literature on psychology and mental health in general, the PsycINFO is fast and reliable because it is its area of specialty (GCU, n.d).

The source also provides peer-reviewed journal articles as opposed to Google Scholar and the Internet searches that offer a vast amount of sources and information that one may not require. The Internet search bring articles and blogs as well as any media platform and source that has the searched information. Imperatively, the Internet search requires more filters to access the very article that one needs.

For instance, the PsycINFO integrates an indexing feature that makes it easy for one to narrow down the scope of their search and get what they need. Further, PubMed is better than Google Scholar and the Internet Search because it contains verified and reliable scholarly journal articles that are reviewed by peers. The implication is that these databases are fast, easy to navigate and how high levels of filtration to attain better outcomes.

Peer reviewed journal articles are essential in health care practice and research because they offer a trusted form of scientific information dissemination and processing. Scientific information is cumulative and builds on itself. Therefore, this trust is critically important in research and application of known evidence in nursing practice to improve the quality of care for patients.

Peer reviews function to encourage researchers and authors to meet the accepted high standards of their discipline and control the dissemination of research information. Peer reviews are better than the general research because the process guarantees critical and high levels of evidence as it is approved by different players or authors. Peer reviews lead to best practices because of their authoritative nature based on the information that they offer.

Introduction 

Morton and Gallo (2017) suggest that nursing practice forms the backbone of service portfolio of any healthcare organization. It establishes the much needed connect between the nurses and the patients. The primary responsibility of nurses is to provide the highest quality of care to the patients and support their family members.

They are also ethically obliged to take care of the patients that they are assigned to. However, care is an extremely subjective term and its definition varies according to the context. Therefore, this paper will explore a specific definition of caring relevant for healthcare organizations. This definition especially applies to the services provided by Family Nurse Practitioner.   

Definition of Caring 

According to Townsend (2014), there are many ways to define the term ‘caring’ in context of a healthcare organization. Personally, as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I believe that care is all about supporting the patients who are not physically or mentally fit and need help of various kinds. This care also helps in getting the right kind of relationship between the patient and nurse. It becomes the bridge to mutual respect between the stakeholders working in the healthcare ecosystem. `  

A Family Nurse Practitioner needs to support, assist, or enable the patient and their family members to improve their health and prevent them from catching certain diseases. Therefore, these practitioners play an important role in improving the overall health of the society.

According to Ramezani and Kazemnejad (2014), the services provided by a Family Nurse Practitioner forms the core of patient’s trust on the healthcare system. This is because the nurses are the first point of contact for patients and their family members. They are always around the patients in hospital to take care of their condition.  

It is extremely important for the Family Nurse Practitioner to possess and execute the right knowledge and skills to take care of the patients facing different healthcare issues. At the same time, they also need to take care of their fellow nurses in order to maintain the environment of collaboration within the organization.

The presence of a Family Nurse Practitioner calms down the patient, as they know that the nurse would manage his condition. Apart from this, the nurses could have a big impact by listening to the patients carefully and giving them the sense that they would take care of them in the tough health situations. When the patients trust the nurses, they share their conditions in better ways.  

Expression of Caring 

A Family Nurse Practitioner provides her services in many different ways, as stated earlier in the paper. Building effective communication is extremely important part of providing care to the patients. Communication involves both, listening to the patient and providing the right advise, counselling, and education to them. The initiative to build this communication channel needs to come from nurses.  

The Family Nurse Practitioner also needs to connect with the family members or guardians of the patient to calm them down, and attain their support during the treatment process. This support also allows the Family Nurse Practitioner to provide the right information to the patients and receive all the details about him. Here, it is important to account that Blais, Erb, Hayes, and Kozier (2015) suggest that it is mandatory for a nurse to spend some quality time with the patients so that they are more comfortable in sharing their condition with them.  

Conclusion 

Lastly, we can say that the key role of nurses in the healthcare system is to provide care and support to the patients. A Family Nurse Practitioner therefore supports, enables, and assists the patients to overcome their diseases and resume the usual routine. These patients could be physically or psychologically in need of care (Watson, 1990). To be able to do her job effectively, a Family Nurse Practitioner should be a very good listener and grasp carefully when the patient shares his problem. Her listening skills and compassion could be the most critical factors while judging the quality of services.
