NR 351 Week 5: Evidence to Support Nursing Practices (Graded)
Week 5 Discussion: Evidence to Support Nursing Practices (Graded)
Patients who have surgery and undergo general, spinal, or epidural anesthesia are at increased risk for hypothermia. Preventative measures are taken to prevent postoperative hypothermia as hypothermia can result in increased complications such as increased risk of surgical site infections, cardiac events, changes in drug metabolism, and increased blood loss. A study was conducted at a Midwestern community hospital that studied the postoperative hypothermic effects of patients after using a combination of preoperative and intraoperative conductive skin warming. The conductive skin warming being studied was a newer technology of a reusable conductive mat that is placed under the patient and has even heating to prevent overheating yet warms the patient. Comparisons were made with the use of this new heating mat to measure results of postoperative hypothermia. The results of this study showed that overall, 3.5% of the 948 patients were hypothermic on admit to the postoperative anesthesia care unit (PACU). Different categories were compared. 5.7% of patients who received warming in preop with the mat and no intraoperative warming became hypothermic. The best outcome was the patients who received the warming mat preoperative with a combination of the warming mat and forced air warming intraoperative where only 2% became hypothermic (Steelman et al., 2017).
I chose this article because it is very relevant to my nursing practice working with surgical patients. Although we have not used the warming mat they are studying, I found the article interesting and applicable. This was the first time I have heard of the warming mat that was studied in this article. I found it surprising that research has shown it takes approximately 17-23 years from the time a journal is submitted until the practice is in place for evidence-based practice changes (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021). The facility I work for does not do any preoperative warming to prevent postoperative hypothermia, so I found this study valuable to begin my research on evidence-based practice to reduce hypothermia in postoperative patients. It will be interesting to see if in 15 years these mats are the preferred practice in most facilities.

Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is for learners to demonstrate their ability to search for evidence in the scholarly nursing literature and share with colleagues.
Course Outcomes
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO 5: Discuss theories and evidence-based practice in the planning of patient-centered care. (POs 1, 8)
Due Date
During the assigned week (Sunday the start of the assigned week through Sunday the end of the assigned week):
- Posts in the discussion at least two times, and
- Posts in the discussion on two different days
Total Points Possible: 50 points
Preparing the Discussion
Discussions are designed to promote dialogue between faculty and students, and students and their peers. In discussions students:
- Demonstrate understanding of concepts for the week
- Integrate outside scholarly sources when required
- Engage in meaningful dialogue with classmates and/or instructor
- Express opinions clearly and logically, in a professional manner
Discussion
Evidence is necessary to improve our nursing practice. Using the CINAHL database in the Chamberlain Library, search for and locate a scholarly professional nursing journal article that meets these criteria:
- Full-text
- English language
- Peer-reviewed
- NOT an Evidence-Based Care Sheet or CINAHL Guide
- Published in the past five years
- Contains evidence to support a nursing practice in your practice area
Summarize this article in one paragraph. Explain why you selected this article. Provide an APA reference for this article.
Remember to credit an assigned reading or the lesson, in addition to your article selection.
