Identify a cardiac or respiratory issue NRS 410

Identify a cardiac or respiratory issue and outline the key steps necessary to include for prevention and health promotion.

Re: Topic 1 DQ 1
A respiratory issue that the author found was pneumonia. Pneumonia is lung inflammation generated by a bacterial or viral infection, in which the air pouches fill with pus and may become solid. Inflammation may affect both lung, one lung, or only some lobes. Pneumonia can be either viral, fungal, or bacterial, originated outside the clinic, called a hospital-acquired disease. Despite the microorganism, the symbols of pneumonia are a bright, penetrating pleuritic chest pain, restlessness, anorexia, productive cough, and tachypnea. Anyone can get pneumonia, but some characters are added at risk than others. Pneumonia and its signs can range from mild to severe. Treatment depends on the condition of your pneumonia, how critical your symptoms are, and your age and overall health. Most healthy individuals recover from pneumonia in one to three weeks, but it can be life-threatening. The good news is that pneumonia can be prevented (Grand Canyon University, 2018).

The key steps that are necessary for the prevention of pneumonia are first getting vaccinated. Get a flu shot each year to stop annual influenza. The flu is a constant problem of pneumonia, so stopping the flu is a great way to prevent pneumonia. The next thing to do is wash your hands. Clean your hands often, particularly after blowing your nose, going to the toilet, diapering, and before consuming or cooking foods. The next thing to do is not smoking, for tobacco harms your lung’s capacity to battle off infection, and smokers have been discovered to be at a higher risk of getting pneumonia. Lastly, one should be aware of their overall health for pneumonia usually develops respiratory infections, be mindful of any symptoms that linger more than a few days.

Atrial fibrillation (afib) is an arrhythmia that is irregularly irregular and can lead to blood clotting. In afib, the atria and the ventricles of the heart are moving at different rates. These rates are chaotic, rapid and out of rhythm with the ventricles and can lead to inadequate ventricular fill time, and there is not enough oxygenated blood to send to the body when the heart contracts (Johnson, 2018). Maintaining a heart healthy life style is the best way to prevent an onset of atrial fibrillation. Examples of a heart healthy life style:(AHA, 2016)

Regular physical activity
Heart healthy diet-low in salt, saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol
Manage blood pressure
Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine
No smoking
Control cholesterol
Maintain a healthy weight
After diagnosis it is very important to take your medications as prescribed. This will help to restore the heart to a normal rhythm, reduce an overly elevated heart rate, prevent blood clots and prevent heart failure.

Re: Topic 1 DQ 1
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease also known as COPD is a respiratory issue that is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States (CDC, 2019). This disease includes a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing related problems. The number one cause of COPD is tobacco use. Exposure to air pollutants such as second hand smoke or unhealthy fumes as well as genetic predisposition can also be a cause (CDC, 2019). People can play a large role in preventing COPD and participating in health promotion in order to avoid the disease or manage it. Prevention would begin with smoking cessation or choosing not to smoke at all. It is so clear that smoking directly causes this respiratory disease that it is so important to avoid smoking. Removing pollutants from ones work or home environment is also a step in prevention and health promotion. Getting the flu vaccine each season is so important in managing the disease in order to prevent flare ups. If one already has COPD medication can be prescribed to help treat symptoms and rehab and personalized treatment programs can help manage the disease and improve one’s life (CDC, 2019). Health promotion activities would include quitting smoking, reducing air pollutants, vaccinating, preventing infections, physical activity and improving nutrition.
