Nurses play a critical role in promoting a healthy populace. Due to this demanding obligation, they should do everything necessary to capture all content in the class and uphold integrity. It is also important to understand what their careers involve and how to develop as health care professionals. As a result, it is important to have an academic and professional development plan. It allows nurses to put great thought into their vision and strategies as they work on what is right and makes them productive. This plan covers crucial areas for my development and success including the academic and professional network of support, research strategies, integrity measures, and professional development. It ends with an analysis of my specialty and the preferred option if I was not a psychiatric nurse.

Nursing students often require both academic and professional support to ensure successful completion of their programs. At Walden University where there are significant numbers of nurses from different backgrounds, consideration of learning support is necessary to ensure effective progression and success. As a nurse student, professional networking leads to the exploration of the entire field of nursing as well as the development of a strong support system within the medical community (Birks et al., 2018). Professional networking allows nursing students to gain new knowledge and experiences, share ideas, and discover new specialties (MacIntyre et al., 2019). Sharing knowledge is an essential part of the learning process. At Walden University, there are numerous resources that can be utilized by the learners to ensure effective learning outcomes. These resources may include academic professionals, fellow learners, healthcare professionals, and the educators.  The purpose of this section is therefore to explore the above academic and professional resources and their role in my academic journey.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: As a program director, Dr. Shelley Armstrong has the responsibilities in course development, academic program reviews, policy and curriculum reviews, as well as the development of students into health science professionals. Dr. Shelley Armstrong has been in the institution for over ten years and she has taught many courses and engaged with different students and other educators. As a result, she is able to provide the right direction in the learning process. I chose Dr. Shelley Armstrong due to her experience in educational matters. I believe she will be able to guide me through the course by providing or suggesting the right resources to be used. Moreover, Dr. Shelley Armstrong will be able to help in the research processes and enhance connection with other educators.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

 

Notes: Elizabeth McDonald has a Master’s degree in Community Counselling. She also has a BA in Sociology. Through continuous education, Elizabeth McDonald obtained a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. She has experience in the counselling programs both for the students and professionals. She has worked in the county jail, juvenile settings, University Counselling, community agencies, and psychological settings. While working in these institutions, she managed to gain experience in dealing with adolescents, children and adults.

Given that nursing programs are characterized by different problems including long times of studies and research processes, there is always a high possibility of developing psychological glitches. I therefore chose Dr. Elizabeth McDonald to help in the counseling processes. I believe she will be able to assist whenever I have emotional problems. The counseling process is essential for learners as it provides solution to both the academic and personal problems. Guidance and counselling is critical in the current education system. In the nursing education, it helps both educators and learners to become more professionals so that they can counter challenges. Dr. Elizabeth McDonald will therefore become a useful member of my network in terms of providing guiding and counselling services.

Notes: Sandrine Happi, CRNP is a registered nurse practitioner working for the Adventist Medical Group. Given her experience in dealing with different patients and healthcare issues, she will be able to provide a gateway to the real world experience in the medical profession. While undertaking nursing studies, it is necessary to have some professional experience. In other words, there is always the need to relate theory that is being taught in class with the real world experiences in the nursing practice. During my nursing studies, Sandrine Happi will be able to provide a link of getting to know the emergent nursing practices that every future nurse have to adhere to. Also, while undertaking nursing research processes, it is always necessary to have someone to provide support (Broadbent et al., 2016). Given that most of the research processes are undertaken outside the educational institution, it is always necessary to have an individual or a professional who can give the necessary support required.

I chose Sandrine Happi because of her professional experience in the nursing practices. Her nursing philosophy also relates to that what I will be trying to achieve as a nursing student at Walden University. Her philosophy is to provide holistic and empathetic care to different patients and to ensure that they are mentally, physically, and spirituality fit. Sandrine Happi is an active member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and American Nurses Association. Her knowledge and experience in the nursing profession will be useful in my nursing program.

Notes: Akosua D. Nuamah, CRNP, MSN is a professional nurse working for the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. She is also an Alumni of Walden University. Having been a professional nurse for over ten years, she has worked with many nursing students, giving them direction and introducing them to the professional nursing practice. I chose her to be part of my network because of her ability to work with students from different universities. She will be able to provide professional experience in nursing. She will also be able to prepare me on different emerging practices in the healthcare profession.

Akosua’s nursing philosophy coincides with what I want to achieve as a professional nurse and as a student. Her main objective or philosophy is to provide quality evidence-based care and effective interventions for different diseases and infections. She is also a strong advocate for disease prevention and health promotion. With her philosophy, I will be able to get enough support required to fully adhere to my nursing philosophies.

Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies

After enrolling for any school program, a student goes forward to identify sources of support that can make the learning process easier and ensure that nothing deters success. Indeed, succeeding in the current program requires every student to know more than what the classwork involves. To a profound extent, the situation obligates MSN nurses to identify growth strategies as professionals and becoming better and more informed members of the larger society. Always, MSN nurses should fully exploit the resources surrounding them to catalyze their academic and professional development. Succeeding in these areas ensures that a nurse has laid the necessary foundation to follow in the program and commences the process of becoming an excellent health practitioner.

Regardless of one’s specialization area, resources vary in scope and content. Strategies can be about what to do as an individual or how to behave when pursuing the program. At times, circumstances force students to forego some of their desires as they do everything possible to complete the MSN program without hindrances. Majority of the resources that I require for the MSN program are readily available while some need some effort to access. Regardless of choice, the principal objective is to ensure that I am applying the right strategies to augment my growth as a nurse as part of the academic success and professional development plan. After a thorough analysis of what is available and unavailable, I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular.

Academic Resource/Strategy 1: Academic Research Journals

As a student, it is always risky to primarily depend on class materials for information. Although focusing on the material covered in class is among the most recommended study tips, nurses should have a broader mindset and utilize multiple sources of materials that improve their knowledge. They should be active members of research teams, and I look forward to a situation where external research to supplement what I learn in class will be the norm. Accordingly, I plan using various journals for materials that promote nursing excellent. For instance, in the nursing practice, the American Journal of Nursing is a source of peer-reviewed materials that every nurse requires. Another suitable source is the American Journal of Public Health; it plays a critical role in educating public health practitioners by providing highly-detailed research articles.

Academic Resource/Strategy 2: The University Library

Libraries are an essential part of learning institutions, and a student who uses them properly has a high chance of succeeding. As students commence their academic journey after enrolling in a program of choice, they need facilitation with many educational materials. These materials should be easily locatable, and libraries are the perfect places for such students’ needs. To support my MSN program’s success, I selected the university library since its philosophy is creating a literate university community. Walden University is structured in a way that carefully selects the materials that students require for their nursing programs. It will be an excellent resource for books and articles and other materials that make me better understand nursing concepts.

Academic Resource/Strategy 3: National Nursing Research Databases

The materials in the library may be restricted to what the university considers as essential for its students. However, in everyday practice, nurses should be looking for solutions for the problems emerging in practice. As an MSN student, I have many gaps in terms of knowledge, and the quest for more information is part of growth as a student. I look forward to getting information from health care databases such as CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, and EBSCOhost. Majority of these databases are the largest in the world in terms of nursing and supplementary health literature. Overall, they are reliable sources of evidence-based knowledge that I need to reference currently and in future practice.

Professional Resource/Strategy 1: Teamwork and Collaboration

For better nursing practice outcomes, nurses embrace teamwork and remain committed to promoting a collaborative care strategy. Since students usually work in groups to complete some class activities, I plan to fully exploit the benefits of teamwork and collaboration, such as sharing ideas and concerns and discussing possible solutions affecting health care provision. Teamwork improves communication between group members. Bosch and Mansell (2015) noted that well-coordinated teams are integral in enhancing nursing experience. It applies the fundamental concepts of inter-professional collaboration that urges health practitioners to work together to improve their potential of providing high-quality care (Morley & Cashell, 2017). I embrace teamwork as a professional strategy since I will be working closely with other MSN students. I will be part of groups where every person should be heard and respected. Considering that teamwork and collaboration outcomes are largely beneficial, I will make teamwork among the leading guiding principles as a student and in practice.

Professional Strategy 2: Applying Evidence-Based Practice

As I learn and provide care through the knowledge gained so far, health problems have become an inevitable part of personal growth and health practice. Health-related problems emerge regularly, and nurses can only respond to such concerns if they embrace research and are determined to investigate the cause and solutions further. Pamela (2018) defined the evidence-based practice as a problem-solving approach that integrates research into the health practice. This definition is restricted to integrating research in health care, but it can be broadened to typify a nurse’s commitment to understanding problems better. In this case, I will embrace evidence-based practice to ensure that I am always updated on health matters, and I can provide a research-based solution when called upon.

Professional Strategy 3: Attending Annual Conferences

Learning can make a nurse highly skilled and able to deliver excellent care. However, that is not enough for a person determined to grow in all dimensions of health. As part of professional requirements, MSN nurses should be adequately informed about practice changes and challenges facing the practice. As health care models change through the integration of telehealth and virtual care technologies, nurses should be part of networks that keep them updated about various health care matters. One way of doing so is attending annual conferences and registering in professional bodies. Annual conferences help a nurse network, which will be critical for success in the program and career development.

Additional Resources/Strategies: Applying the Nurse-Student Mantra

Overall, this academic strategy obligates the nurse to think in terms of actions and not facts. When solving a health problem, the nurse-student mantra informs nurses not to primarily concentrate on what is affecting the patient physiologically but broaden to understand why conditions occur. Using this principle, I should always assess how my knowledge will be crucial to patients and general public health. Given this, every problem that I encounter should be a learning opportunity as I offer solutions.

 

Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

 

Students usually follow the rules set by the institution. A critical segment of these rules has much to do with academic integrity. Here, the implication is that some standards must be met when a student engages in the education process. Broadly, the required standard for academic and professional integrity is to be sensitive to how a person uses ideas borrowed from online sources. A student can make some references to improve knowledge but copying them is a breach of integrity and a sign of unprofessionalism. This section assesses the connection between academic integrity and writing, professional practice and scholarly ethics, and the approaches I will use to maintain integrity and ethics as a student and professional.

 

 

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

 

Assignments and exams are a dominant part of a student’s life. Considering the impacts of exams on the student’s life, it is right deducing that students do everything possible to pass assignments and exams.  As students search for answers to various questions, they usually use online sources as the primary sources of information. These sources include blogs, websites, books, and articles from professional databases (Heinrich, 2017). As a nursing student, nursing blogs contain volumes of information that a student can use to improve class knowledge. Academic integrity is being honest and moral in academic settings. The most relevant practice in education settings that shows someone upholds academic integrity is crediting the sources of borrowed ideas (Cavaliere et al., 2020). In this case, writing and academic integrity are related in the sense that writing must uphold the principles of academic integrity. Any idea that a student uses from external sources should be cited and referenced accordingly.

On the connection between professional practices and scholarly ethics, each profession has an essential minimum of how its members should conduct themselves. For instance, health care providers should be honest and compassionate at all times. According to Epstein and Turner (2015), professional nursing practices represent the guidelines [adherence to the code of conduct] regarding how a person should behave in practice. To some extent, professional practices entail the rules of behavior when a person engages in scholarly work. The two concepts are related in the sense that a person cannot be an ethical professional without being honest in scholarly work. For instance, a student who cheats his or her way through school life is likely to use the same techniques to move up the professional ladder.

Regarding Grammarly, Safe Assign, and Paraphrasing, they all help improve the quality of a paper that a student submits for marking. To a profound extent, the central role of Grammarly is to check grammatical errors and improve readability. However, it has a plagiarism checker where a person compares his or her work against online sources thereby detecting and helping to remove plagiarism. One way of removing plagiarism is by paraphrasing the detected part. Carter et al. (2019) described paraphrasing as representing information in different words from the original without changing the meaning. Safe Assign plays a similar role to Grammarly. PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Success as an MSN student requires some sacrifices and a lot of dedication to the set rules. I am optimistic that I will finish the program without any issues related to integrity. In my academic work, I plan to be reviewing the syllabus often as I check what the course requires of me. Secondly, I plan to start my work early so that I can finish on time. Starting early will ensure that I have adequate time to proofread, check for errors, and correct accordingly. Thirdly and most importantly, I should avoid sharing my work at any time. All work submitted must be checked via Grammarly and copies in the repository deleted. Grammarly, SafeAssign and Turnitin apps will be among the resources I will use as a student. Therefore, paraphrasing will be the main approach to avoid copyright issues.

As a professional nurse throughout my career, I should be conversant with the rules that guide the practice. These rules keep changing, and it is a personal obligation to ensure that I am updated on the changes. As a result, I will closely follow updates from professional websites and journals as I ask questions where necessary. To make me a productive and more informed student, I will be using the library as a close resource. I also look forward to scenarios where I will share ideas with my colleagues in social groups as I promote technology in the nursing practice.

In conclusion, a student automatically becomes a member of a broader community after joining the university. This community of scholars consists of colleagues in the same and different professions, instructors, and researchers who have studied different educational concepts and published them in various books and articles. As students live in this community, they must uphold academic integrity and avoid ethical violations. As explained above, they must know how to behave as students and professionals to ensure that their conduct is academically ethical as the institution and general practice obligate.

When doing research, the whole process is guided by a general idea. However, it is challenging to get peer-reviewed research on general concepts, hence the need to be specific as much as possible. After coming up with a specific idea [causes and prevention of medication errors], I went further to search for reputable sources from the library’s health databases. If a student does not have access to a library, search engines such as Google Scholar are highly reliable when locating peer-reviewed research. The last step of the analysis includes checking an article’s authorship. Research articles from professional journals are usually peer-reviewed.

Regarding strategies, a nursing student must have keywords when finding peer-reviewed research. The keyword helps to save time instead of looking for the required research information haphazardly.  The second strategy is filtering information such that a database only produces peer-reviewed resources. Since this option is not available in all databases, an MSN nurse can read the abstract and analyze an article’s structure. Most studies where experiments take place are peer-reviewed. Journals are useful resources for peer-reviewed research. Leading databases such as PubMed and Medline are quality sources of peer-reviewed research too.

Conclusion

As illustrated above, my topic of interest is medication errors. It is among the critical issues dominating the nursing practice, and exploring peer-reviewed research on the topic will enhance my understanding of the same and related concepts. As also explained, nurses should know how to locate peer-reviewed articles, and this is a skill I will keep advancing.
