End-of-life care may become an issue at some poitn for elderly patients. Despite the emergence of palliative care programs and hospice programs,most elderly people do not die in thier own home as it is their preference. There can be several reasons for this occurance. One reason is that the family members do not want to accept the reality of their loved one passing on, so they take them to the hospital in hopes of some sort of curative interventions or by some time for their loved ones to stay longer. According to PBS, one driver of this occurance is quantity fo hospital beds, a second driver is the medical culture of specialists adn sub-specialists who are seen as curing illnesses for their job.
Nurses play a vital role when it comes to a end-of-life for both the patient and the family members. According to pathwayshealth.org, nurses are a sole source of support during this time. Accepting the truth can be difficult for both the patient and the family members, this is where difficult decisions are to be made as well. It is at this time where the nurses step in a provide guidance for patients and family members and helping them adapt to these changes. Although the nurse is there for support and guidance for the family members, the most important responsibility is ensuring that the patient’s wishes will be honored. To ensure that a patient’s wishes are being honeored, the nurse must advocate for the patient and help guide and support the family adjust to these wishes that the patient has made.

The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar?
Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.
In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a presentation with an info graphic to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.
