The public health nurse must be aware of issues that can come up when working with diverse populations within different communities. There are many stereotypes and biases that come along with different people depending on race, age, and gender. A stereotype is an assumption that is preconceived about a certain group of individuals. A bias is a personal attitude or feeling about an individual or group based upon the stereotype that is involved with the individual or group of people. Bias is a negative evaluation of a certain group and those involved relative to another. Implicit bias is the unconscious attitude shown based on stereotypes that directly affect understanding. Choices, and actions that may affect patient care. The nurse must be well informed about biases and stereotypes in order to be aware and sensitive so that they can provide the best unbiased care possible. It is very important that the community health nurse is culturally competent to ensure all people get adequate health care regardless of the group they fall into (Falkner, 2018).

Cultural competence is the ability to interact in an effective way with people of different beliefs, and cultures. When a public health nurse can do this, they show respect and responsiveness to health beliefs and different practices (Falkner, 2018)

Our country is becoming more and more culturally diverse. Whether because of war, genocide or conditions economically, many people are relocating from under-developed countries of origin to more urban areas or suburban areas in a more affluent and peaceful country (Gans, 2020). The nurse must take the time to learn about other cultures, and to care for the patients coming from a clean slate where the nurse is open to learning their beliefs and ways of life. The nurse must let go of any preconceived ideas or labels on a patient due to their culture, race, gender, or background.

The LEARN model is an effective way to move through being apprehensive which can be brought on by cultural dissonance. The five steps are to listen, explain, acknowledge, recommend and negotiate. The nurse must listen with empathy to the perception of the patient, explain their own perception of the problem, acknowledge and talk about how the perceptions of the issue are different and similar, recommend a treatment plan, and negotiate a final treatment plan that is mutually agreed upon (Falkner, 2018).

The RN to BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using nontraditional experiences for practicing nurses. These experiences come in the form of direct and indirect care experiences in which licensed nursing students engage in learning within the context of their hospital organization, specific care discipline, and local communities.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
